Vance, another thought: About how long is this "6 Amp" intermittent 
pulse? Typical 1 Amp fuses will hold 6 Amps for between 0.2 and 1 
second. If the pulse really is 6 Amps but is short, a 1 Amp fuse may not 
blow. There are "instrument fuses" designed to blow rapidly, but you 
will have to rig some kind of dummy holder. Some of them have wire 
pigtails so they could be soldered to the remnants of a blown 
German-style fuse.
