[W126 Coupe] Sun roof repair

Rick,

What exactly is wrong with your sunroof?

I have a procedure somewhere for re-setting the mechanism, but that only
deals with getting a working sunroof to open/close properly, i.e. stop when
it is supposed to.

Let me know if this is the issue with yours and I'll dig it out from my hard
drive.

Cheers,
Axel

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Sun roof repair

Yeh, the old sun roof repair thread.
Temps will be in the mid 50's here today and, if my sun roof worked, I
would have it open.
I wondered if there is anybody on the list who has successfully repaired
their sun roof and has a good idea of the method, parts source, and what to
watch out for. Basically how to do it.
Being in New England, I would never leave my roof open for 24 hours, even
in the summer with a clear weeklong weather forecast.
I have the tilt / slide feature.

Thanks,
Rick Hesek

I was fortunate and found a set of Centra Chrome Wheels on eBay. You are
looking for an offset of 23 to 25. Here is a link to the site that I used
to
get center caps for my R-31 style wheels.

Carl,

I thought the BBS center caps were of a "proprietary" design. At least the
ones that I have seen will not take the standard MB caps.

Cheers,
Axel

Hey, I just don't like chain letters. I don't care about what the content
is.

Now, I guess that I'm going to have to dig the thing out of the archives so

I can see what I am supposedly against. Is my house going to burn down or
something, since I haven't "passed it on"?

I will say (based on the title) that I am against killing Americans.
Especially since I am one myself.

Hey Robin - you don't have to like "chain" letters or even read them. Just
delete them. But why try to control what others do ? Just delete what you
don't want or like to read.

Personally I never forward any of those letters, but I do read them, and I
am interested in what others have to say.

While I agree with Robin's sentiment, I want to further chastise you by
not only saying please don't send chain letters to the list, but also
please check chain letters for validity before you believe them. That
was not written by an Australian dentist but by a self-proclaimed
neoconservative (I'm not saying that's good or bad, just that that is
how the person classifies himself and that gives you the viewpoint) in
The National Review back in 2001 and it refers to a dubious ad that IIRC
nobody was able to substantiate.

At the very least you should expect the truth from your chain letters. 1
- that was written for The National Review. 2 - the referenced ad was
one of those things that popped up immediately after 9/11 in the news,
without proof, and just disappeared (like how those people dancing in
the streets after 9/11 were actually mostly footage of the Kuwaiti's 10
years earlier happy because America had come and kicked out Saddam. The
ones that weren't, and in fact were new footage, it turned out they had
been told that if they danced in front of the camera and shouted things
they would get free food). Also, the thing about Afghanistan being the
country with the most US Aid to date in 2001? That is only if you
include the military aid we gave them to fight the Soviets, but if you
count that then you have to count the troops we put in Vietnam. For the
same reason we gave aid to the Afghanis, we also helped the Taliban
establish themselves, Saddam establish himself, and Khomeini establish
himself.
I'm not some anti-establishment hippie. My dad volunteered for the USMC
during Vietnam as a non-US citizen and he says that all able bodied
males should serve their country for at least a year. At the same time,
it's important that we distinguish truth from lie, and that chain letter
was a lie (not only does it credit it to someone other than the person
who wrote it, but that bit about 30 different languages in the WTC
wasn't in the real article), but the article it was based off of
contained some non-truths.
It's a nice sentiment that everybody is in America, and it's a true one.
It's also true that, as I've found from living in semi-rural NC for the
last 3 years), in much of the country there is still hatred of Black,
Hispanics, Jews, and Moslems on solely racial/religion grounds.

I am learning fast, some people think this letter was great others think
it's trash. In any event some people like to express their different
opinions and one can get involved in a lot of emotional discussions and
before we know the mudslinging starts.
Fortunately we all agree about one thing: That the Mercedes-Benz is a great

automobile so let's just stick to that for that is what this list is all
about and I apologize that I ever mentioned that article and I promise I'll

never send anything that even resembles a chain letter ever again.

By the way, I'm a Canadian of Danish heritage and my wife is a Canadian of
French, Spanish, Chinese and Philippino heritage.
My brother who sent me the disputed letter is an American born in Egypt to
Danish parents who became Americans.
I presume you read the disputed letter.

Somehow I have a feeling this aint over yet.

Thank you very much and you all have a nice day.

Carl

While I agree with Robin's sentiment, I want to further chastise you by
not only saying please don't send chain letters to the list, but also
please check chain letters for validity before you believe them. That
was not written by an Australian dentist but by a self-proclaimed
neoconservative (I'm not saying that's good or bad, just that that is
how the person classifies himself and that gives you the viewpoint) in
The National Review back in 2001 and it refers to a dubious ad that IIRC
nobody was able to substantiate.

Carl,
I liked your letter. These show up every once in a while and while this one
has a questionable pedigree, what it says is right. I love the sign at the
local IBEW union parking lot that states "Only American Cars can park here"
with realization that those now include Hondas, MB's, BMW's, etc. There are
some Ford and GM products that are all or partially made in Canada now, so
does that mean I can't park a Malibu there but a Z4 is fine? :-)

Are we having fun yet?

Hey, Bill P - I trimmed this!! See how it's done? Don't you love living in
Quincy when it shows up on national news with more snow than common sense
allows? Tell me again when you're coming out to Vegas to visit? I'd suggest
tomorrow.

Later,

All I can say is this: I think I really opened a can of worms or like the

both.
I guess us Danes are a bunch of shit disturbers and not realizing it, we

Relax Carl..

We all second guess from time to time or think we've stepped in
something unwittingly. Just let it go and stay engaged in the list on
whatever subject you'd like. I asked a question of a list memeber the
other night on the phone and he said about the same thing. Just let it
go and stay true to your beliefs, etc. etc. Or as the younger crowd
often says...it's all good!

I guess I am feeling badly for our new member Carl.
So to take the heat off of him for a bit, here is a
humorous (I am sure it is going to piss somebody off)
piece we can attack.

David

Political Science for Dummies

DEMOCRATIC

You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
You feel guilty for being successful.
Barbara Streisand sings for you.

REPUBLICANISM

You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
So?

SOCIALIST

You have two cows.
The government takes one and gives it to your
neighbor.
You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his
cow.

COMMUNIST

You have two cows.
The government seizes both and provides you with milk.
You wait in line for hours to get it.
It is expensive and sour.

CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.
You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.

BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.
Under the new farm program the government pays you to
shoot one, milk the
other, and then pours the milk down the drain.

AMERICAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO
on the 2nd one.
You force the two cows to produce the milk of four
cows. You are surprised
when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to
the analysts stating
you have downsized and are reducing expenses.
Your stock goes up.

FRENCH CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You go on strike because you want three cows.
You go to lunch and drink wine.
Life is good.

JAPANESE CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an
ordinary cow and
produce twenty times the milk.
They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded trains.
Most are at the top of their class at cow school.

GERMAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of
beer, give excellent
quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour.
Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation
per year.

ITALIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows but you don't know where they are.
While ambling around, you see a beautiful woman.
You break for lunch.
Life is good.

RUSSIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You have some vodka.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You have some more vodka.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
The Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows
you really have.

TALIBAN CORPORATION

You have all the cows in Afghanistan, which are two.
You don't milk them because you cannot touch any
creature's private parts.
You get a $40 million grant from the US government to
find alternatives to
milk production but use the money to buy weapons.

IRAQI CORPORATION

You have two cows.
They go into hiding.
They send radio tapes of their mooing.

POLISH CORPORATION

You have two bulls.
Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting
to milk them.

BELGIAN CORPORATION

You have one cow.
The cow is schizophrenic.
Sometimes the cow thinks he's French, other times he's
Flemish.
The Flemish cow won't share with the French cow.
The French cow wants control of the Flemish cow's
milk.
The cow asks permission to be cut in half.
The cow dies happy.

FLORIDA CORPORATION

You have a black cow and a brown cow.
Everyone votes for the best looking one.
Some of the people who actually like the brown one
best accidentally vote
for the black one.
Some people vote for both.
Some people vote for neither.
Some people can't figure out how to vote at all.
Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you
which one you think is
the best-looking cow.

CALIFORNIA CORPORATION

You have millions of cows.
They make real California cheese.
Only five speak English.
Most are illegals.
Arnold likes the ones with the big udders.

Cool! (pun intended)

TWC made it look like you might thaw out by June. Glad you're still
out-n-about!

Take care,

In response to an ad in a Pakistan newspaper:

To Kill an American

You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was
actually
a
report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a
reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let
everyone
know what an American is ... so they would know when they found one. (Good
one, mate!!!!)

1. An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish,
Polish, Russian or Greek, or a Dane, Swede, a Norwegian, a Finn.
An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Islander or
Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or
Pakistani or Afghan.

2. An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho,
Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

3. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim.

4. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only
difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them
chooses.

5. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will
answer
only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for
the government and for God.
6. An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the
world.

7. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of
Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the
pursuit of happiness.

8. An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every
other
nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

9. When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans
came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!

10. As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any
other
nation to the poor in Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best of
everything...the best products, the best books, the best music, the best
food,
the best services. But they also welcome the least.

11. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your
tired
and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless,
tempest tossed.

12. These in fact are the people who built America.

13. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September
11,
2001, earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the
World
Trade Center victims were from
14. at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages,
including
those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

15. So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did.

16. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other
blood-thirsty
tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself.
Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They
are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to

That stinks. I think maybe Satish should consider taking them off the
parts suppliers list in light of this.
Are you photographing the restoration process by the way? It's always
interesting to watch cars go from junk to showroom. IIRC this 220 was in
pretty awful shape when you picked it up.

I have been looking for a 560 SEL and have located one in Memphis,
Tennessee. Unfortunately it is about 450 miles from my house to
Memphis. Is there anyone on the list who could give me a read on the
cosmetic condition of the vehicle. The dealer describes some scratches
but I cannot really see them from the photographs emailed to me. I
really don't want to drive down there and be surprised as to what I see.

I would be glad to compensate someone to give it a look and report back
to me. I will also have it checked out mechanically before I would
finalize the purchase.

It is at Smith's Imports and is a midnight blue 1991 560 SEL.

Thanks

The point was that the letter you are passing is a known urban legend, not
even true, and in general junk. Personally I have seen this same email in
various forms over 3 years. If you have an opinion to express do it in a
more meaningful manner, pass on news articles, write a letter and pass it
on, whatever, but that type of foward is irritatingly junk and falls into
the same genre as "my dog died from swiffer sweeper" and "some child has
cancer if you pass it on she will be cured". Chain mail. So I was just
trying to impress upon you that it isnt really polite netiquette and in the
future perhaps it would be a great idea to check if information is junk or
not, snopes.com is very easy to use.
