At the very least you should expect the truth from your chain letters. 1
- that was written for The National Review. 2 - the referenced ad was
one of those things that popped up immediately after 9/11 in the news,
without proof, and just disappeared (like how those people dancing in
the streets after 9/11 were actually mostly footage of the Kuwaiti's 10
years earlier happy because America had come and kicked out Saddam. The
ones that weren't, and in fact were new footage, it turned out they had
been told that if they danced in front of the camera and shouted things
they would get free food). Also, the thing about Afghanistan being the
country with the most US Aid to date in 2001? That is only if you
include the military aid we gave them to fight the Soviets, but if you
count that then you have to count the troops we put in Vietnam. For the
same reason we gave aid to the Afghanis, we also helped the Taliban
establish themselves, Saddam establish himself, and Khomeini establish
himself.
I'm not some anti-establishment hippie. My dad volunteered for the USMC
during Vietnam as a non-US citizen and he says that all able bodied
males should serve their country for at least a year. At the same time,
it's important that we distinguish truth from lie, and that chain letter
was a lie (not only does it credit it to someone other than the person
who wrote it, but that bit about 30 different languages in the WTC
wasn't in the real article), but the article it was based off of
contained some non-truths.
It's a nice sentiment that everybody is in America, and it's a true one.
It's also true that, as I've found from living in semi-rural NC for the
last 3 years), in much of the country there is still hatred of Black,
Hispanics, Jews, and Moslems on solely racial/religion grounds.
