Great minds...that's a trick that has kept me from being stranded, without taking the risk of just shorting across the fuse.

20 years ago, I used to do field service on customer premises electronic equipment, I was in Pyote Texas, 50 miles from anywhere, 100 miles from a flight home on Friday evening, and had a 7x24 customer with an important printer out of service for lack of a fuse, 6 or 8 amp, I don't remember. I couldn't leave the equipment down over the weekend, and didn't want to come back on Saturday. I knew the circuit wasn't bad, I'd replaced the fuse with one from another printer, it held fine, I had 20 amp fuses but didn't want to risk that, so I wound a single fine wire strand around the fuse body, tried it, POOF! , so I tried a double strand, POOF! so I kept twisting one extra strand around the dead fuse body till it would just barely hold up. Worked great. It held up till the next scheduled service visit.
A rig job, but a carefully calibrated rig job...
