How come you aren't going to use them Mike?

They look pretty!

Memorial Day weekend is out for me, as I'm already committed...(ha ha)...
Most
of July I'll be on the road in the RV, heading towards South Dakota with a
few
stops along the way in Chicago, maybe Detroit, KC, St. Louis, etc. so that
month
is out. So I guess if early May is out, then June is the best month?
Saturday
might be better if we are thinking of the "after drive party" rather than
Sunday, especially if some folks are coming down from further away and
needing
to stay overnight. So the 3rd, 10th, 17th or 24th. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks Axel and Hirsch,

My first stop was my local MB guys who were not able to assist, my piece is
actually cracked so refurbishment is not an option.

I will try my office in South Africa (they seem to have quite a collection
there of MB parts).

If successful I will report back.

Regards to all,

Thanks guys - that's great - along with Vance's and Malcolm's comments - it
looks like I can get the old CDs working without dragging an old PC back
into the house.

Just as a matter of interest - I switched to individual mail list downloads
rather than the daily digest and these two responses (and only these two)
went to that place that I don't check (you know - where my multiple millions
of dollars worth of lottery wins go every day). Blowed if I can figure out
how some of these PC rules work!

Thanks again for the help.

Since you are using the 500 ignition and fuel systems, the early 500 EZL
won't have that functionality for the transmission quickshift will it?

Also, you'll have a hole on the bell housing for the CPS - may need to block

that off as the early 500 ignition system does not have that there.

Members,

I am not a computer genius nor am I willing to work towards becoming one
however I have written a couple of emails about selling a couple of my SEC's
(2-white, 2-black) and have merely had a single response.

Should any one be interested in one of them please email me at
drmet at pacbell.net or better yet call me at 714-546-1403, 714-465-3348 or my
cell at 714-742-0605. With the price of the body parts going to the moon, a
solid no BS car that is worthy of a true SEC addicts attention is easily
worth more than the current cost of the hood, fenders, grill, front lights,
bumper, radiator, fans etc. in raw unpainted condition. If you are
interested let me know.

I have also asked why we (as current subscribers) cannot get our cars on the
web site.
I know it is egotistical but heck why do we own them except for others to
appreciate.

Let me know about getting my cars on the web site.

Hi Peter,

With you living in Sarasota, I don't know if you would have the full advantage
of using the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. In fact there is a whole debate in the
mbcoupes archives on using fully synthetic or not on the W126. I can only go off
what I have read up myself and my own experience using fully synthetic. The only
downside I can see is that it is very expensive. However from my own experience
and my way of thinking is if the viscosity is lower on start-up, then the oil
pressure would build up a lot faster protecting the engine sooner. Also, I can't
say for certain, but I could swear that I have a few more HP than I did before I
started using fully synthetic. Thanks for the compliment though.

Cheers,
Vance.

Dear Vance: I own an 89 560 sec, 113k miles, and a 91 560 sec, 34k. Both cars
had service records indicating they used 10w-30 castrol. I have been using
synthetic in my street machines for years. However, I have not changed the 126's
over. Sounds like you know your lubricants. What do you think about changing to
the Shell Helix? I live in Sarasota. Thanks for your advice. Peter Weiss

Mike,
Engine lubricants have advanced and improved in performance a great deal since
the owners manuals for these cars were written up.One of the best lubricants I
have come accross and used for years in my Euro 560SEC is the Shell Helix Ultra
5W-40 fully synthetic lubricant. This particular one exceeds the requirements of
most cars these days. Also this particular one is approved by Mercedes Benz
themselves as well as Peugeot-Citroen, Rover Group, VW/Audi, BMW, Porsche and
Ferrari.

Hi gang,

Speaking of Coupefests and get togethers, for those of you in the
mid-Atlantic area, and others interested in joining us, Ellen (aka Legs)
will be organizing a get-together probably in the mid May timeframe. Just a
heads up to tentatively mark your calendars, more details to follow. Basic
idea will be to have a road rallye where we answer questions (and watch Dick
spill coffee on himself again and others miss questions totally because they
don't realize its a "test"), then have some sort of food/drink-fest
afterwards. Like I said, much more details to follow - just putting the idea
out there.

Cheers,
Markus

The fan clutch took me ten minutes to R&R. Sounds like it's a difficult
thing for the water pump though. If the harmonic balancer has to come off,
then it sounds like the radiator has to come out too. No fun here.

You might want to check with your mechanic what they would charge to do
it (i.e. it might be cheaper than you think). From what he told me, it's
not hard, but tedious, and involves everything the service manuals say
it does. I looked at it, considered what a PITA it would be for me to do
it, especially considering it was (and is) winter, and it was just
better to let him do it for a few hundred bucks (I don't have my
receipts with me but I think it was like $300-400 in labor). You might
want to check the fan clutch while you're there and replace that at the
same time.

Right side backseat floor in my 1990 560 Sec. I m thinking the backseat
window or the Moonroof is not shutting completely or the door is leaking. I
think the manual talks about drainage tubes. What's the best way to start
testing where the leak is coming from.
Thanks, Steve

Mike,

My mb mechanic told me $250.00 was as cheap as he would go, it's a royal pain in
the posterior. While your in there the short hose and thermostat and gaskets as
well. My old gto was easy, this is a nasty job.. good luck.

Mike.

Will a 500 Euro motor and tranny from a 500SEL fit into the SEC chassis
with oil sump, engine mounts and transmission mount all needing to be
the same configuration??? Or was there a different set-up employed on
the wider, longer SEL chassis than that of the SEC. My SEC is an 83 and
I believe the donor SEL is an 84 or 85.

Any comments will be much appreciated.

Regards,

Dick

Bellamy,

"A good rule of thumb is a water pump should never cost more than half the
market value of your car. So while a Pontiac water pump may just cost $33.,
it is really touch-and-go if it is worth doing."

Harsh comment, though for the majority of Pontiacs it is probably correct.

Cheers,

Axel

The shop rate for the water pump is around 4 - 4= hours. If there is the
slightest doubt about the front engine seal, go the extra, remove the
balancer and replace the seal. This is NOT a backyard-on-the-ramps type of
job. For one thing, the water pump bolts are a bitch to get. The water
pump should be about $140. (considerably more at M-B!) Change the
thermostat and housing hose as well as the lower rad hose while you're at
it, even if they look OK. They must come off anyway and they are less than
$20.

A good rule of thumb is a water pump should never cost more than half the
market value of your car. So while a Pontiac water pump may just cost $33.,
it is really touch-and-go if it is worth doing.

All the same as far as I know - same mounting points for engine and
transmission.

Just a longer driveshaft on the SEL.

    Hi Peter,

With you living in Sarasota, I don't know if you would have the full
advantage of using the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. In fact there is a whole debate
in the mbcoupes archives on using fully synthetic or not on the W126. I can only
go off what I h ave read up myself and my own experience using fully synthetic.
The only downside I can see is that it is very expensive. However from my own
experience and my way of thinking is if the viscosity is lower on start-up, then
the oil pressure would build up a lot faster protecting the engine sooner. Also,
I can't say for certain, but I could swear that I have a few more HP than I did
before I started using fully synthetic. Thanks for the compliment though.

    Cheers,
    Vance.

    Dear Vance: I own an 89 560 sec, 113k miles, and a 91 560 sec, 34k. Both
cars had service records indicating they used 10w-30 castrol. I have been using
synthetic in my street machines for years. However, I have not changed the 126's
over. Sounds like you know your lubricants. Wha t do you think about changing to
the Shell Helix? I live in Sarasota. Thanks for your advice. Peter Weiss

    Mike,
Engine lubricants have advanced and improved in performance a great deal
since the owners manuals for these cars were written up.One of the best
lubricants I have come accross and used for years in my Euro 560SEC is the Shell
Helix Ultra 5W-40 fully synthetic lubricant. This particular one exceeds the
requirements of most cars these days. Also this particular one is approved by
Mercedes Benz themselves as well as Peugeot-Citroen, Rover Group, VW/Audi, BMW,
Porsche and Ferrari.

    Mike,

My mb mechanic told me $250.00 was as cheap as he would go, it's a royal
pain in the posterior. While your in there the short hose and the rmostat and
gaskets as well.

If there is the
slig htest doubt about the front engine seal, go the extra, remove the
balancer and replace the seal.

The wood trim from any 126 fits and there are plenty availble from local
salvage yards, just insure that you know how to remove it (by taking out change
holder in front and sliding) first so that you don't break the clips.
