[W126 Coupe] replacing radio

Later cars may have external amplifiers, but my '82 does
not, and I doubt that yours does Tad.
If so the wiring to the rear speakers will be fine (car
stereo stores will try to tell you that you need to get
super high-tech "interconnects" to replace the existing
speaker "wires" . . . don't bite). You just need to find
where the wires come off of the fader control and may need
to add some length to them. You're gonna have to do some
cuttin'.
Speaker sizes are indeed odd and smallish. With a custom
adaptor, I was able to get some high quality 4" round
speakers & separate tweeters in the front. 4X6 ovals Might
fit, but I have never found an oval that has decent sound (I
used to own a car stereo store - have tried a Lot of
things). In the back you are very limited in both diameter
and depth without doing some difficult bending or cutting.
Shops will have good guides to show what will fit, but there
is always some ambiguity. I doubt there is any speaker
upgrade that you can do that will not require some
adaptation.

Tad,
If you just want to find a solution to your broken Becker
player, I'd say get a used one off of ebay. If you are
looking for a new replacement unit, your MB dealership will
have a Becker unit with a CD player that will replace your
old unit.
The entire Becker system, if not proprietary technology, is
very difficult to change out piecemeal. The rear speakers in
my 10-speaker system were 16 cm (6.3"), the dash speakers
were 10 cm (3.9") all in 2 ohm. Not easy to find
replacements for those.
And then you have to deal with the factory fader control
between the seats, amplifiers behind the rear seats and
really thin wiring to all components.
Its either change everything, wiring included, or fix the
parts that don't work.
Cheers,
Axel

Well, I looked up prices for Nakamichi head units... ouch.
They look nice and would match the MB perfectly, but I am
not willing to spend that much on the car just yet. I'd like
get everything running smoothly first. For now I'm just
looking for a cheapish head unit so I can listen to my
tunes.
>From what it sounds like, the best thing to do it replace
the head unit, replace the wires running to the speakers,
and replace the speakers themselves. I have never installed
speakers in a car before, I assume the holes for the
speakers are measured in centimeters? What sizes should I be
looking for?
Thanks!

I second the motion on the floor, Nakamichi over Sony. The
Sony will do just as the name states, xplod, Sony is a trash
head unit.

Nakamichi. Expensive tho.Scott Kelley

getting a radio to replace the one in my car. Currently it
has a cracked screen and now turns off randomly. What
should I be looking for in a radio that will work in the
car? I assume just having a line out would work, correct? I
am really wanting one that has a built in aux port so I
can plug my mp3 player into it.
