Mine did the same thing. around 180K. They replaced the rocker arms, ball studs and shimmed the valve springs. Zero ticking now. They did all this when they did the timing chain replacement. I got lucky and the cams were ok. And im running mobil 1 syn. Have been since I had it with 90K on the clock.

Worn cam lobes. Also check the oil viscosity vs temp. If the oil doesn't flow right away it can cause that. Also the cam lobes are notorious for wearing down.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Engine Ticking 89 560 SEC & Harder Starting
Hi,
I am starting to develop a more frequent ticking in my 89 560 SEC motor.
It used to happen once every month now it is happening every other day.
When I do my first start of the day I hear a ticking in the motor until I rev it a few times or drive it to a decent rev then it goes away.
The motor is also not starting as quickly as it was (more cranking) even a month back. I even have to hold the gas pedal to the floor once in a while to start it.
The car has 171,000 on it.
At 160,000 I had a new fuel dist, new timing chain & tensioner, plugs, dist cap & rotor, idle speed switch, idle speed control actuator, lambda set, all fuel filters & (oil filters, & oil 5,000 with Mobil 1), timing set, new valve cover gaskets. I think a little more but I cannot recall.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Jack
