[W126 Coupe] Engine Ticking 89 560 SEC & Harder Starting

Straight 20w is not an ok oil to use in these cars. IIRC the only approved straight weight oil is 30w, and it is only if you are in 86F or higher weather at all times. You want to run 10w-40 or 20w-50.

Mobil 1 is a great oil BUT ! it is not suited for older engines. You will find if you change your oil back to a straight 20w like castrol or similar it will go back to the existing 160,000 noise. Mobil 1 tends to drain out of hydraulic lifters over night and has trouble getting pressure in first starts.

My boss put Mobil 1 in a 1980 280se from brand new as he was a Mobil dealer, this car has now done 853,600 klms on the same engine and only uses .5 of a litre between 10,000klm services. I think that .5 of a litre is leaking. So I put it in my 1985 380 sec with 178,000klms on the clock and I got the same symptoms as you are suffering. Changed back to a straight 20w and it stopped.

Cheers Stu-e.

Hi Jack,

I had the same thing on me 86'. Took it into my mechanic and he replaced a couple of lifters and adjusted a few things on the drivers side and now 80% of the sound is gone. The other 20% is coming from the passenger side, which I plan to have him do soon. As I recall the cost was <$200.00. Good luck.

Hi,

I am starting to develop a more frequent ticking in my 89 560 SEC motor.
It used to happen once every month now it is happening every other day.
When I do my first start of the day I hear a ticking in the motor until I rev it a few times or drive it to a decent rev then it goes away.
The motor is also not starting as quickly as it was (more cranking) even a month back. I even have to hold the gas pedal to the floor once in a while to start it.
The car has 171,000 on it.
At 160,000 I had a new fuel dist, new timing chain & tensioner, plugs, dist cap & rotor, idle speed switch, idle speed control actuator, lambda set, all fuel filters & (oil filters, & oil 5,000 with Mobil 1), timing set, new valve cover gaskets. I think a little more but I cannot recall.
Any suggestions?

Thanks
Jack
