Front or rear??
If it's in the front of the car, then I'd suspect lower ball joints. Could
be upper suspension arm rubber bushings where the bolt goes through the
inner engine compartment sheet metal.
If in the back, then, with the SLS, the rubber bumpers on top of the
hydraulic rams (shock looking things). If it has SLS and rides very hard in
the back, blown accumulators can make the rear suspension essentially solid
and then it makes it tough on the rams.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] suspension
When driving my '86 420 SEC slowly on a rough surface I can hear lots of
little clunks coming from under the car as though the suspension is worn or
loose. I would like to know if I need to have something checked. Jack OZ
