sedan/coupe versions of the M117 engine, but yes they are different
and the SL version MUST be retrofitted for SEC duty..
The oil filter assembly on the 560SL is "traditional" benz whereby
the canister is dropped from below the car by means of a center bolt
that goes up through the canister from below, into the housing.
The 560SEL/SEC version of the motor has the more modern oil canister
lid that is removed from the top, via a bolt that goes down into the
housing from above.
Both versions use exactly the same oil filter, just different housing
designs.
BTW the SEC version is MUCH preferred -- less messy, can be done from
above (particularly in conjunction with a topsider or other vacuum
oil removal system.
The only drawback is that you don't have to get under the car, so you
can't see what's going on under there unless you make an effort to.
If you've ever had an oil bath from a bottom-canister-removal setup,
you know what I'm talking about...
To me, the 560 in a R107 chassis is not as glassy smooth as it is in
a 126, but that's just my opinion.
Cheers,
Gerry
