Because that's how it's illustrated in my service manual.  I thought it was
a very nice accessory-to be able to select one's ride height while in
motion.

Definitely not a gimmick.  But remember, on your car he actually has
leveling on all four wheels!  Here in the States most everyone has
experience with rear-leveling only.  I agree that it is probably the bombs,
(of which there are four!), but don't jump to conclusions about your
mechanic.   He might know more about this than most Americans.  I understand
that this was a very rare option on the US spec cars.  Tell me, does yours
have the pull-knob next to the headlamp switch?  And the corresponding dash
indicator?
