Thanks for this Kent, I was beginning to Doubt my 380 SEC we have
capitalised about R 17 000 ($ = +-R6.58) we are seriously considering
Selling this car but its this website that allows me to get access to the
best experts around, Guys Like Dick really go into detail and help us.
Most of the time our 380 is in the mechanics shop, suspension parts, idling,
performance, timing, co, stalling, vibrations, electronic failures.. She is
currently at the Mech due to stalling costs so far are:
To replace the following:
>Both suspension in the rear at R3000 each and explanation for my Susp fluid
loss
>Rear Bushes (R2000)
>Ignition Module at R4000
So now the question is do we keep her?
I really need some sort of checklist that will help me restore this lovely
car, presently I feel as I I am emptying my money in an empty well.
Please Advise

I had first 500 SEC 1984, then a 560 SEC 1986, then a 420 SEC 1987 and then
a BMW 750i 1988. Between 1985 and 1991 all of them except the 560 for about
2 - 2.5 years, the coupes kept their value fairly well, the 420 I actually
sold for just little more than I had bought it for 2 years earlier, the BMW
was a complete disaster, lost 75% of the purchase price in about 2 years, it
was impossible to sell. It is of course good if you are buying a few years
old, you can get them for next to nothing, but it is likely you thereafter
have to keep it for the rest of your life.
After the BMW 750i and some more various MB's, a Jaguar XJS V12 and two
Rolls Royce Silver Spirit, there is no doubt the car (cars) that was the
best was the Mb coupes, so now after many years I bought myself the fourth,
the 560 SEC 1989. Not as sporty as my Saab 95, but for weekends it is great.

I was looking at the 2-4 yr old BMW at the time I wrote that. I
"need", and do not currently own, a 4 door large sedan. I am
actually half way down the road on the caddy DTS ( meets the need of
highway cruiser with 2 couples ) - my Lotus Elise and W126 provide
all the "driving" experience I need, but sure wish they were gonna
upgrade before 2010 if ever. So - that's why I think I'll do better
with 17's instead of the 18"s.
Or this there a better tire recomendation that the Dunlop SP that are
so noisy now with quite a bit of life in them yet ?

The Dunlop SP is the WORST performance tyre on the market...I've been
burdened now w/ two sets on cars I've purchased and each time I've come to
dislike the tyre even more. It's loud, rides like a truck, wears poorly,
doesn't work well in the rain (or the dry for that matter).. My tyre tech
who has been @ it for about 20 years loathes them more then I do.
Get a proper set of Good high end rubber. Bridgestone is making 1 or two
good tyres these days and the new Michelin Pilot Exalto's are working very
well on my CE as well as some customers car.
If money is Really a bit concern I'd go w/ the Kuhmo's.

Before buying the DTS, rent one. I have had the experience of road trips in
two different DTS's (rentals) and in both, the passenger side center vent
would randomly close whenever it felt like it on the highway (the vibrations
of the road would slowly close it). Also, whenever you hit grooved pavement
it would track like nobody's business.

Which SP's are we talking about? The SP Sport 5000's on our BMW have been

John,
Thanks for the email address, I do have it somewhere along with the phone
number and address. I just need to spend a little time to going thru my
reciepts of things I bought in the last few weeks.I hope Mark didn't forget
about us, if he did at least I only out $20.00 for a plastic piece that
holds the 2 seat heat buttons and the horns, but wanted m.o. before he was
leaving for Las Vegas to take the part off, I mean for a lousy $20.00. I
don't know about you but an email from Mark even if it's about a problem
would be polite. I'll look for my info and if you want phone number I'll
email you directly.
Thanks Again,
Clay

The Dunlop SP is the WORST performance tyre on the market...I've been
burdened now w/ two sets on cars I've purchased and each time I've come to
dislike the tyre even more. It's loud, rides like a truck, wears poorly,
doesn't work well in the rain (or the dry for that matter).. My tyre tech
who has been @ it for about 20 years loathes them more then I do.
Get a proper set of Good high end rubber. Bridgestone is making 1 or two
good tyres these days and the new Michelin Pilot Exalto's are working very
well on my CE as well as some customers car.

I had first 500 SEC 1984, then a 560 SEC 1986, then a 420 SEC 1987 and
then
a BMW 750i 1988. Between 1985 and 1991 all of them except the 560 for
about
2 - 2.5 years, the coupes kept their value fairly well, the 420 I
actually
sold for just little more than I had bought it for 2 years earlier,
the BMW
was a complete disaster, lost 75% of the purchase price in about 2
years, it
was impossible to sell. It is of course good if you are buying a few
years
old, you can get them for next to nothing, but it is likely you
thereafter
have to keep it for the rest of your life.
After the BMW 750i and some more various MB's, a Jaguar XJS V12 and

If you're in the DC area, and you go to Radial Tire in Silver Spring, Paul
(don't know his last name, but he's the owner) is basically that program.
There isn't a tire he doesn't know.

Jonathan, are you getting stuck in my spam filter (which my school
intelligently decided should not be an accessable folder via online e-mail)
or do you just not have any new info for me? Since I get your e-mails to the
list, I figured this way it would ensure that it's not a filter issue. Don't
need to be a pain, just trying to get some numbers before the 18th.

On the trading of the wheels deal I have used DHL 5-6 times selling M/B
wheels w/tires on Ebay. All you have to do is cut a pieces of cardboard the
diameter of wheels and tape it to wheels front and back, then shrink wrap the
whole thing and thats it. I never shipped overseas but in U.S. I would use a
ground ticket and they would ship air anyway probably because it's easier
for them and buyer would tell me they got them 2 days after shipping and I
would be paying ground price, which is cheaper then ups and any others out
that would ship that size and weight. You can check price to South Africa
w/zip codes and weight online DHL site.
Good Luck,
Clay

Hi Vance,
Fixing stone chips is pretty straightforward, - not rocket science.
Nevertheless, be careful to not damage the paint around the chip.
With a very small spot like the size of a pencil point, don't worry about
clearcoat. Get some touch-up paint of the proper color. Clean the area
lightly with paint thinner, - remove oils & silicone. Use an artist's
brush, - very small brush. Fill in the chip with maybe 2 to 3 drops of
paint. Let this dry.
Then using a small block or rubber squeegee, - sand it off flat using very
fine sandpaper, - maybe #600 or finer, - higher number paper. You are
cutting down the little dimple of paint you applied to match the level of
the surface of the surrounding original paint. Afterward, buff the area
with rubbing compound, - by hand, with a soft cloth. Use a progressively
finer compound. Then look at the area from all angles in all light to see
if the scratches are gone. If you see scratches, buff some more.
Practice makes perfect.

One of the reasons I had my SEC painted in a Chrysler Bright Silver (PS2)
rather than Mercedes Bright Silver is access to normal U.S. touch-up paints.
The DupliColor touch-up paint container for Chrysler PS2 not only has a
brush, as expected, but the cap has what appears to be an oversized
ball-point pen built into it. That "pen" tip can apply color into the chip
hole very easily. I don't know if DupliColor does any MB colors but that
touch-up paint container is really great!!
It's a good enough container that I'd go buy some on sale, dump out the U.S.
colored paint, rinse it with acetone or lacquer thinner, and re-fill it with
the MB paint.
Later,
Mike R.
