[W126 Coupe] Fuel Requirements or How Can I Adjust 1989 560SECToUse 87 Octane

Maybe I am missing the point. I want my car to run as well as possible, with as much power/timing advance as possible, and no detonation. So I use premium all the time.

Around here, there is an eleven cents difference per gallon from 89 to 93 octane. There is a twenty-three cents different from 87 to 93 octane.

So if I drive 15000 miles per year, and assume 17MPG, using 87 saves me $202 per year, and using 89 saves me $97 per year. Doesn't seem worth it to me.....I'd rather pack my lunch twice a week and keep my Benz happy. :)

I've been running "middle grade" in my 560SEL for several months now with no deleterious effects (yet). I do a couple tanks of middle, then one of premium. Kinda trying to keep the gas in the tank mixed a little better than middle grade. The key is don't run the level all the way down. The SEL is primarily a town car with an occasional run down the freeway to get home (<10 miles). Did a 50 mile run to Primm, NV via the freeways and filled up with premium before I left.

Haven't done anything to the car for the lower grade gas and I've been listening but haven't heard any pinging. Works for me.

I once read that the premium requirement was due to the fact that in the 80's lower grade fuel did not have the 'detergents' as part of the fuel. These days all grades have them. Have a 420 that previous owner accumulated 265K miles on the car on 87 octane - I've used 91 in it have been tempered to use lower, also have a 300CE use 91 in, but did try 89 a couple of times no change was noted, however don't drive aggressively these days.
