"And here's the best bit - the diff on the car is a 3.46 !!! Yee-haa !"
RKS:
I can't quite see the point of this. The standard 560 starts off in second gear by default, presumably because first gear is too dangerous on any but the better surfaces (esp. for the average driver). My 300HP version 560 (1987) with 265/35 18" rear tyres will spin just a bit from a standing start at full throttle on a good tarmac road. Any lower ratio and I'd spin more and rev out too quickly (does around 70k in first, 140 in second and 200 in third @6,000 rpm - no idea what it does in 4th (yet)).
If you want more pickup from a standing start you would be better off with the 560 LSD and a mod to make the car always start in first gear. Even in second it pushes you well back into the seat and gets to 60mph very quickly.
Isn't the standard diff ratio between 2.24 and 2.65?? Considering the lower ratio (typical US version of the 560SEC) I calculate the top speed through the gears (using my car as an example) is lowered to 45kph in first, 90 in second, and 129 in third. If the top speed is 250kph (standard, in the manual) then this is lowered to 162kph or just on 100mph flat out (you might have to let goggomobiles pass on the open road).
Just the thing for children wanting to partake in street drags, but the extra torque will rip the guts out of the transmission within a week, a month at the most. There is already a limitation built into the CIS-E specifically to protect the transmission from excessive torque (but it only works with the standard diff). I'd rethink the low ratio diff.
Kind Regards
