Hi Bellamy,

The car does have a full service history, and seems to have been
regularly maintained at M-B. It's only done 95000km though, and the
last service (90,000) was back in 2004,
so it may very well be transmission oil / filter / etc. The previous
owner really did not drive the car much.

The car is currently being given it's full 100,000km service by a
very reputable Mercedes mechanic, and I get her back on Thursday. I
thus can't have a look at
the detailed service record to check for gearbox repairs at the
moment, as it's currently with the car.

I do feel silly, however, for it not occurring to me to just manually
downshift (once you get used to an Automatic, you tend to leave it
alone :-p)! It probably won't be as abrupt?
Sounds like a good idea to me...
