In order to replace the gearshift know you need to do the following:
1. Remove the ashtray.
2. Remove the coing tray below the ashtray.
3. Remove the plastic frame surrounding the gear knob.
4. Slide the wood forward and lift it up.
5. Carefully remove all the connectors from all the switches and put the
wood aside.
6. Remove the screws attaching the plastic shifter gate.
7. Get a 15 mm crow's foot wrench to loosen the nut holding the gear
shifter shaft to the sleeve.
8. Unscrew the gear knob and replace with your new one.
9. Put everything back in reverse order.
Make sure you have the right gear knob. I purchased a burlwood knob on the
internet for my '90 SEC and found that I could not engage "B". I thought I
had done something wrong, but found out that the shaft is different on the
'90 and '91 models from the other series 2 w126.
How it works on the series 1 cars, I have no idea.

Axel J. Wulff
