I find them all the time for newer W126's for $30!! But not the 380SEC of course.
MB part# is 126 800 0348. I tried Dad's, Potomac, etc.
Help, dealer wants $500!!

I don't recommend not listening to the manual...how many miles are on the car? If it's a real high mileage engine maybe enough slop is in it now where it won't be an issue, but on tight engines using an oil thicker than recommended can hurt cold start lubrication (also thick oil means less hp)...but rereading your question, you said the manual says 20-50 is fine in your climate...so what's the problem?

I have to plead guilty! These cars are so finely engineered that I'd been cowered into attempting to follow zee instrrrukshuns to zee letter. Thanks, Bellamy, for freeing me from the fear! Zee kar vill get 20-50 and like it!

Paul;
I believe you are being a tad too particular over oil weight. SOME people might go so far as to use the word "paranoid". In your climate, even if your engine had a Masters Degree from Harvard, it couldn't notice the difference between 15-50 and 20-50. And likely that is why you can't find 15-50 anywhere. (I've never even HEARD of it.)
The 20-50 will be just fine. All year round. MORE than just fine, actually. Just stick with ANY good quality brand. Personally, my hand starts to shake when I reach for Uncle Walmart's Brand, or Slippery Sam's "Guaranteed for 200K" Slicker'n Snot 5-60 One Size Fits All High Performance Engine Oil.
Use Mobil 20-50.
Change your oil and filter as specified.
