Thanks Eddie,
I tend to agree with you as the book was published in the UK. The only other place I saw the 272 HP figure mentioned was in another book article in conjunction with the European Kat model as you mention. Thanks, this is one less thing that I have to ponder.
Best Wishes,
John

There are several possible reasons for the higher HP and torque figure, but most likely the editor got the engine's mixed up and thought the US engines are the same as Euro engines with Kats. In fact, Euro engines with emission controls are still more powerful than US because of higher compression ratio (which was specified after some of the initial technical specs were published). The US engines had lower compression because during the initial release period the US fuel still varied too much and could cause knock/ping/pre-ignition. Same problem in Australia I believe.
Any other sources listing the higher HP? Several people have dyno-ed stock engines for our cars and they all come out to about 200 hp (varies between 190 and 205). My engine is FAR from stock. As a matter of fact, every time I do any major work on my car I find something else that has been modified (which means I have to buy more expensive parts)...for example last time I had the front shocks changed I discovered to my horror Bilstein HDs are not the same as the blue striped ones (AMG) I had in the car..which the shop had already thrown out.
The previous owner didn't even have any idea as to what had gone into the car and didn't keep much paperwork. He just threw money at the car, and got tired of it in the early 90s when this model was replaced (at 24k miles). Plus he raced porsches.

The book I refer to is:
Mercedes - Benz since 1945.
Volume 4: The 1980's.
A collector's guide
by James Taylor
This book can be found on the MBCOA website.
This is the quote I find on page 38 and there is at least one other mention of higher horsepower and torque in the book.
" In the USA, for example, the emissions - controlled 5.6 - liter engine was down to 272 bhp from the 300 bhp of its European equivalent. The difference was academic, though: even the 272 bhp engine was much more powerful than anyone needed in a country with a blanket 55 mph speed limit ! "
Later in the book while discussing various engines this is the description of the 560 SEL/SEC
" 5,547 cc, 96.5 x 94.8 mm, V8 - cyl OHC, type M117. Bosch fuel injection. 300 bhp at 5,000 rpm; 325 lb.ft at 3,750 rpm ( non - US models. ) 272 bhp at 5,000 rpm; 307 lb.ft at 3,750 rpm ( US models. ) "
I have wanted to bring this forward for some time and since you seem to have actual proof this seems like a good time. I am interested in any comments.
Best Wishes,
John

The stock California( 50-state, federal, etcetera) 560 sends exactly 200 hp to the rear wheels. Taking off cats and installing headers gives you about 25 hp. I have other modifications.

I am curious the year & model of W126 you have please? I have a book I bought through the MBCOA that states the US version 560 is actually more horsepower than the 238 or so that is advertised.
Thanks,
John

Well finally got to a dynojet, interesting results...
RWHP= 256.1
RWTQ= 298.22
so using standard conversions for drive train power loss gives me:
HP= 299.6 -> 309.9
TQ= 348.9 -> 360.8
Note, this was with oversize (heavy) rims, and reinforced clutches in the transmission. So that means my drivetrain losses may have been higher or lower compared to normal calculations.
The projected power figures almost exactly match the amg 117 5.6 SOHC engine with tubular headers (but i am running euro 4 peice cast manifold still). so....does anyone know what was renntech's advertised hp and torque for the 6.0? What other modifications did AMG do to the 5.6 SOHC besides cams and headers?
