I have an 83 SEC with the passenger door seat control needing replacement.
In 83 there was no seat memory button and the wiring harness was soldered
directly to the switch.

I have a 90 300SE parts car now with both memory seat switches working.
Does anyone know if the memory switch is interchangeable with the non-memory
switch and if so anything special about wiring or fit I need to look at?

Many thanks,

Dick Spellman

If my experience with an 85 380SE is relevant, 84 was a split year,
where even post 84 models without memory won't fit on pre 84 models
without memory. I suppose you could take it apart and figure out the
soldering, but it's definitely not plug and play.

Hi Richard:

I realize it will not be plug 'n play, question is, can it be made to work
in which case I'll do both sides of the SEC with the updated memory switch.

Maybe I should rephrase my original question to where would I locate the
wiring harness (loom) color codes and functions for both model years to see
if I can make an in-line solder connection to the old harness and preserve
the plug-in harness on the memory seat switches.

Regards,

Dick

Tom;

Sorry, I didn't state that well. The .032 is recommended. Some people
believe that a wider gap will help delay fouling out if oil consumption is a
problem. I'd suggest .035 if you want to try it, but not .045 because I
think you'll just be taking them all out again right away. That's all.

Have you checked your compression? Do you figure your problem is rings or
valves (valves or stem seals)? Or has it happened just once and could be
the three (?) plugs themselves?

Depending on how much you drive, and how quickly the plugs foul, you might
consider just having extra plugs and switch them out when performace
declines. You CAN clean and gap the ones you take out and hold them as
spares again if you don't have access to new ones. But generally spark
plugs are pretty cheap and the cost of always having a spare complete set is
nothing compared to the trouble of changing them.

Nasty bugger...motor is OK, but b/w wiring and other electronic gremlins not
a car I would look to own. The early 140's have a laundry list of known,
expensive issues and if the cars are not maintained to the letter they
tumble down hill quickly. Never mind that your engine room harnesses Will go
bad, as will your evaporator at some point....:-/

If you can find a prestine, 1 owner LOW mileage example w/ solid service
records it may be worth while if the price is right. Otherwise I would stay
away.

W140 A/C problems - very expensive to fix. Apparently many of the components
difficult to access behind firewall and dash. I've seen some of these
vehicles with the interiors almost totally gutted for a/c repair.

Bellamy,
I have been told that it is valve seals. However, I don't think the
mechanic checked compression. The plugs that are the most fouled are the
front 3 plugs on the right (passenger) side. Sometimes (1 out of 4-5
starts) on startup after the car has been sitting overnight, I get tapping
for a second or two. It does not happen again later in the day.

That is correct...

I'm working with Daryl on a 14" brake system, drilled and slotted with
Wilwood 4 piston calipers. As these fit nicely in an 18" wheel, they
will upgrade the braking about 40% by the sheer rotor size increase
alone... Not to mention, they should look great through an open BBS RA
type wheel.
Once I have them on the SEC, I will share my opinions along with photos
if someone will help me post them on a site.

Hi,

Hi Dick,

The wiring loom consists of a few extra wires which link the extra buttons
on the seat control switch to some extra relays on the seat base frame power
board. I have also noticed that the non-memory looms running to headrest and
backrest motors have 2 pins whereas the memory motor connections have 4
pins. So there is some extra fuctionality at the motors as well.

Note also that the memory function is also linked to the electric steering
column.

Ideally remove the seats, seat control switches and steering column from the
300SE. And the wiring looms for the seats - they are a pain to remove
through the door entry points but other than that dead easy. They run upto
the fusebox and plug into points a and b.

Then remove the seats from your SEC and simply transfer the base frames from
your 300SE seats to your SEC seats and transfer the backrestmotor set-ups
into your SEC backframe....all you need to do is remove the backrest leather
cover on both seats and change the internal motors and looms.

You'll need to remove the SEC seat switch looms and run in the SE seat looms
of course and change the seat control switches.

Finally the steering column - it is a DIRECT fitment into your early SEC,
with only one modification required. The metal firewall that the column
bolts upto just beneath the dash has an extra side curving that just needs
to be grinded away. The column then bolts upto directly. Simple job - remove
the 6mm allen key at the steering box, 3 10mm bolts at the centre of the
column and 2 13mm bolts just under the instrument cluster.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it's easily feasible in one weekend. You'll
then have memory seats, memory and electric steering column. The combination
indicator and cruise switch also needs to be changed over as the electric
steering column switch has a longer loom.

Basically a change of looms, motors and switches, but very valuable
upgrades...and all in a weekends work.

Hello Talbir:

That is a major bit of work. I think I will shoot for mapping the existing
wires to the updated switch or, just sell off the memory switches and buy
the original 83 passenger switch.

Thank you for the fine write-up. Should I become that ambitious once again
on the SEC, I'll put it on the list.

By the way, the 18 inch Lorrinser RSK 2's with 10 inch wide tires in the
rear fit very nicely now that the fenders are rolled and the differential
and sub-frame bushings renewed. No rubs, when the car squats in the rear.
Your earlier offset and tire dimensions were very helpful.

Many thanks,

Dick Spellman

I don't want to seem sacrilegious, but are there any other forums out there
that are worth joining? mbworld.org has gone really downhill and I could
particularly use a group that knows about the W201 series (specifically the
190E 2.6). Thanks

Hi Tom:

There are several expert Mercedes mechanics and there is Stu Ritter the
Mercedes USA Technical Advisor on
http://www.mercedeslist.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes .

The service content quality is very good. I've been on this list primarily
for the M103, 126 chassis, 300SE's.

Hope this helps.

\Dick

By the way, I converted my 4th MB (an 86 300SE Euro) to R-134 after
repairing a Nippo compressor leak. Did the receiver dryer, vac'd it down
overnight, held 31 after the repair and then charged using my gauges. Once
again really good 'cool' results.

190revolution.net is great for fun info on the 190E. Benzworld.org is
pretty active as well.

All in all, mbcoupes is the best for w126 though. The other forums are
usually filled with crap like "how do I put 23" rims" or "what kind of wax
do you use". Also, lot's of FS items, but at ridiculous prices. Also
constant whining about gas prices.

Eddie

That is correct...

I'm working with Daryl on a 14" brake system, drilled and slotted with
Wilwood 4 piston calipers. As these fit nicely in an 18" wheel, they
will upgrade the braking about 40% by the sheer rotor size increase
alone... Not to mention, they should look great through an open BBS RA
type wheel.
Once I have them on the SEC, I will share my opinions along with photos
if someone will help me post them on a site.

Are you happy? Do you have the peace of mind knowing nothing else needs to

I just had the following work done on my 1988 560 SEC, at 54,400 miles:
a.. remove/replace coolant expansion tank, replace coolant level sensor
b.. remove/replace leaking power steering low pressure hoses, power
steering filter and container cover gasket
c.. change air and fuel filters, replace fuel accumulator and fuel pump
check valves
d.. remove/replace front and rear drive shaft flex coupling
e.. change brake fluid, blow out drain hoses
f.. lube door seals, lube linkages
  The itemized parts were:
    a.. coolant expansion tank $61.25
    b.. coolant level sensor 38.75
    c.. 1 gallon coolant 10.00
d.. power steering low pressure hose 25.00
    e.. power steering filter 11.00
    f.. 1 cover gasket 4.95
    g.. 5 hose clamps @ $1.95 9.75
    h.. air filter 38.00
    i.. smog ___ filter 12.20

    l.. fuel accumulator 197.00
    m.. 2 fuel pump check valves @ $22.50 45.00
    n.. 2 drive shaft flex couplings @ $112.00 224.00
    o.. brake fluid 10.50

    s.. TOTAL PARTS/SUPPLIES: $758.00
The total labor charge was $595.00, for a grand total of $1,378.00.

Is this MB-only shop charging fairly for the parts and services provided?

Well, his first two prices are a bit out of line, but his coolant price is
Great if he's using Genuine coolant!
As for the remaining items, he is charging straight list price..no real
suprises.

A lot of Indy's now state they don't save you on parts but on labour.or vice
versa.....

I would be curious to hear how much his hourly rate is...see what kind of
time this fellow is talking about...book or actual etc..

IMHO it could be worse, it also could be better...but if this fellow really
takes his time, loves what he does etc then you have done well.

The rate to have my Isuzu Axiom worked on today at the dealership was $89.00
per hour. Most people know when they are being screwed and most people ask
for an estimate before they have work done. It is easy enough to check the
price of parts on line. I would guess from the variety of service you had
done there was some significant troubleshooting & inspection time involved.
I will not apologize for being "existential" with my answer but you know you
are going to find someone who will tell you they know someone who would have
done it for less.

Ah, c'mon, John, it wasn't an existential question, but a practical one.
;-)

sure, I'd be "happy" with the peace of mind regardless of price, but that
doesn't mean I want to get suckered. And I don't know enough about MB
repairs to be able to judge whether the charges I paid are reasonable and
customary, or inflated -- so I'm asking the illustrious experts on this list
for their input.

(FWIW, my question arises because a friend who also owns an
older-but-cherry Benz tells me that the shop I use charges significantly
more than the shop he uses. I don't have any basis for comparison, as we
haven't had the same repairs performed. Both shops claim to be charging
"standard" rates at $85/hr).

  Anyone?

I just had the following work done on my 1988 560 SEC, at 54,400
miles:
remove/replace coolant expansion tank, replace coolant level sensor
remove/replace leaking power steering low pressure hoses, power
steering filter and container cover gasket
change air and fuel filters, replace fuel accumulator and fuel pump
check valves
remove/replace front and rear drive shaft flex coupling
change brake fluid, blow out drain hoses
      lube door seals, lube linkages
      The itemized parts were:
      coolant expansion tank $61.25
      coolant level sensor 38.75
      1 gallon coolant 10.00
power steering low pressure hose 25.00
      power steering filter 11.00
      1 cover gasket 4.95
      5 hose clamps @ $1.95 9.75
      air filter 38.00
      smog ___ filter 12.20
      fuel filter kit 39.00
      44K injection filter cleaner 19.50
      fuel accumulator 197.00
      2 fuel pump check valves @ $22.50 45.00
      2 drive shaft flex couplings @ $112.00 224.00
      brake fluid 10.50
      [illegible] 4.15
      radiator cap 7.95
      shop supply charge 25.00
              TOTAL PARTS/SUPPLIES: $758.00
The total labor charge was $595.00, for a grand total of $1,378.00.

Is this MB-only shop charging fairly for the parts and services
provided?
