[W126 Coupe] electrical expertise needed

 Hi gang, As electrical stuff is one of my "weaknesses" with cars, and thankfully a topic that I don't have to address often, I need some help from the group.  What exactly do I need to do if I want to run 12V from the battery to something to test it, but also ground that same item?  Do I just tape a wire to a metal part of that device on one end, and a grounding point in the engine bay on the other end - is that all there is to "grounding"? Thanks,Markus
