Jack, sometimes you can clean the rheostat or bypass it entirely with a wire to get full intensity. Also, the suggestion to replace all the bulbs is a good one. As the bulbs age, besides the dirt/dust getting baked on the outside, what really degrades their performance is that during operation, the filament will outgas metal molecules that will deposit on the inside of the bulb glass and tend to turn them black.
