Rob,

New Jersey Transmission Rebuilder

The NJ Transmission Rebuilder is

Europeon Transmission Xchange 201-489-7770 240 Lodi Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601, Potomoc Rich is contact. Cost I paid was $1,250 plus $150 shipping includes torque converter, 1 year unlimited milage http://www.europeanexchange.com/index.htm . I decided on this company after an exhaustive search of companies from Florida, OK, GA, CA, and NJ. I decided on this company because of their rep with rebuilders and installers.

I purchased a tranny from them about 2 years ago or so and had it installed by Laslo's Foreign Car 703-690-6514 or 491-7545, 14747 Build America Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22191 (route 1 near Opitz Boulevard) About 5 minutues from route 95 near Dale City. Laslo is an old MB mechanic. He is not the cheapest around, but does a good job. He will "dealer" you if he can, but I shipped the tranny directly to him, delivered the car, he swapped it out, and sent the old tranny back since the company pays for shipping return. Other than needing an adjustment to my modulator, I have not had any issues. I think I paid Laslo about $600 or so. The final cost was more than that since I paid for other related work to the driveshaft, hangers, seals, and what have you. If you need the complete details, contact me off line and I will provide them.

There is another dealer in Atlanta that I beleive does a great job, but his tranny costs about $1800 or so at the time. The cost is higher since he will not sell directly to retail, but only through a tranny dealer. I think the company is GPW. They use Brinson's in Vienna for the retail transaction.

for engines, just in case anyone is interested, Noel's is hard to beat and a great guy to boot. Very informative, the last of a breed.

NOEL'S 800- 733-6635, www.noels.com or 407-644-6700,

906 RAILROAD AVENUE, WINTER PARK, FLORIDA 32789. I purchased a rebuilt from him and have not had any issues.

>As a non-DIYer, I recently had my 86 560 SEC brought into a repair
shop to
>have the transmission either repaired or totally replaced, as it was
>slipping between first and second gears. Price quoted for repair was
>between 2500 and 3500, with total replacement in the 5000 range. The
car
>has 133k miles and has been routinely maintained since purchase in
SoCal.

>First question, does the quote I received seem reasonable? (repair
shop is
>in Northern VA, just outside of DC)

>Second question, if I am going to spend somewhere in the neighborhood
of 2500/3500, does it make any sense to spend the extra money
to have an entire new transmission installed?
>
>As always, any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
>
>Many thanks in advance,
>

Sincerely,
