Hi Rob:

First question, in what state are you located? There is a highly recommended rebuilder in New Jersey that one of the mbcoupes members has used. He does the complete rebuild with all required updates for under $2k. Chet if you read this can you post the shop contact information to the list? Depending on where you live there are other shops as well as Bellamy points out.

Also, if this is flaring between 1st & 2nd gears, is it possible Rob just has a bad B2 piston which is a few hundred dollars to repair by a shop?? Anyone??

Dick

  Subject: [W126 Coupe] Transmission Question

A couple of quick questions if I could:

As a non-DIYer, I recently had my 86 560 SEC brought into a repair shop to have the transmission either repaired or totally replaced, as it was slipping between first and second gears. Price quoted for repair was between 2500 and 3500, with total replacement in the 5000 range. The car has 133k miles and has been routinely maintained since purchase in SoCal. The only glitch is that the car has been sitting for a couple of months while I was away on business.

First question, does the quote I received seem reasonable? (repair shop is in Northern VA, just outside of DC)

Second question, if I am going to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500/3500, does it make any sense to spend the extra money to have an entire new transmission installed?

As always, any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

  Many thanks in advance,

  Rob
