I'm sorry that you feel that way.
BTW- How do you define "extreme" environmentalism?

Extreme environmentalism is a mental disorder and those afflicted are not
able to recognize any valid tradeoffs or alternative courses of action.

Regarding Halon Fire Extinguishers in North America:

Thanks for clarifying the information on Halon extinguishers. It is
important to realize that these extinguishers have been restricted for
environmental reasons for ten years.

Halon extinguishers are well suited for all classes of fires. They are
light, portable and offer the greatest effectiveness for their weight.
Halon is colourless and odourless and leave no residue. In other words,
halon extinguishers are very well suited in mobile situations (like cars and
aircraft). In fact they are still manufactured and sold for use in aircraft.

Of particular interest to anyone who has an OEM Halon fire extinguisher in
their Mercedes Benz:

The current Environmental Protection Act states:

2. (1) Except in accordance with section 6, [section 6 deals with
inspection] no person shall discharge or cause or permit the discharge into
the natural environment of,

(a) halon 1211, also known as bromochlorodifluoromethane;

(b) halon 1301, also known as bromotrifluoromethane:

(c) halon 2402, also known as dibromotetraflouroethane.

2. (2) Despite subsection (1), fire extinguishing equipment that contains a
substance mentioned in subsection (1) may be used to fight fires, except
fires caused for firefighting training purposes.

The act goes on to state that halon extinguishers of less than 3 Kg (The MB
one is 2Kg) can not be refilled, but can be disposed of without
certification. But you can buy (or sell) one if it was made before January
1996, and all of them were.

So the restriction on the OEM MB fire extinguishers here means that it is
illegal to set them off for amusement.

The good news is you can still use your Halon fire extinguisher to fight a
fire.

But check on your State or local laws first... in an emergency, it may be
illegal to do anything but stand idle and watch the fire burn, which to me,
really doesn't sound environmentally preferable.
