[W126 Coupe] Air Intake..

Does anyone know why air distribution hoses are needed when there are already huge intake runners leading into the heads?
Also, what is the purpose of the hoses coming out of the valve covers? 
and aren't those hoses tied into the air distribution hoses?
anyone know where the sensor is located for triggering the cold start valve? 
Lastly, is that sensor's sole responsibility to trigger the valve, or is it used for anything else?

All these questions are really important to me, any help would be greatly appreciated.
