Several things:
I was looking at a 500E on E bay. The dealer was wanting $19,995 for it.
The odometer showed 55,000 and change.
I was interested the car looked good, so I made an check...like car fax. It
turns up showing 68,594 miles in June of 1998.
The car looked beautiful. What looks good is too good to be true.
Can you help me get OEM 17 inch wheels for my 91 560 SEC?
Also, are the Jet performance chips worthwhile?

Having done this job a number of times (mostly on coupes) I've found the
trap is indeed necessary. As far as removing the old adhesive goes, I use an
industrial squirt bottle filled w/ lacquer thinner (and a splash of acetone
for a little extra kick). That along w/ some plastic puddy knives and the
job isn't bad. I start by spraying all the adhesive down then work about a
foot square section at a time as the LT flashes off rather quickly.
Thus far using 3M Super 90 (double coat) hasn't let me down.

The correct answer is legs. If you think it is cars first, try going
without the legs for awhile. Without the lady, you really do need a car and
the other stuff to take your mind off the lousy home life.

Has anyone else run into issues when replacing the 4
large rubber front sub frame bushings?
I've been playing with the front suspension of my 86'
560 SEC since July (no, not everyday- I'm not that
slow ;-) and I just seem to run into one pain after
another.
I originally replaced the front sub frame bushings
with some off brand that I had picked up on ebay a few
years back. When I tried to tighten them (80 NM-
Correct?), they shattered like glass. I then got a set
of MB replacement bushings and this week, I've had 1
of the 4 shatter on me.
I even went and bought a new beam-type torque wrench
before attempting the last set, to make sure I wasn't
over tightening.
Has anyone else had these issues?
It seems like a poor design to have such a critical
suspension item be so fragile. The one side I was able
to get together, I torqued to only 70 NM for fear of
shattering those as well. I would think these items
should withstand a fair amount of over tightening
before cracking and not be so close to their limit
with the factory torque rating?!
My concern now is that if I do get them all together
and tighten them to only 70 NM, what's to say a little
aggressive driving won't fatigue these as well until
they crack?
Does anyone make replacement bushings where the cups
are out of STEEL instead of these weak aluminum
inserts??
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks-
Elm Zobens

Mr. Meyer,
I hope you don't mind me emailing you. I am just so stessed over my 1985
500 SEC. I haven't had him but a few months and seems as though my oil
disappeared. As I was driving on the freeway last night, he just quit
running. No lights came on until I pulled over because It was as if I were
just coasting. When I pulled over he ran for a few seconds longer, then
died. I didn't know that these cars hold so much oil and so far have just
put in two quarts but he still won't start. I didn't smell anything hot, no
lights came on. Do you think I have ruined him? If you have any input on
this, please email me back. Thank you. Patricia James, Abilene, Texas

On my 1973 450SL I used some foil-backed rubber foam air conditioning
duct insulation from the hardware store. The SL tends to scorch the
paint on the bonnet anyway, and that layer of aluminum foil kept my
fresh white paint nice and pure.

I did the same thing with parts from Rusty a couple of years ago and it
still looks good. I used the old liner to cover the engine and was
careful not to get any gunk on the fenders.

My 2 cents. This is not a job to be taken lightly and there are many
failure stories on Mercedes Forum. A experienced friend helped me with
my smaller 380SL and like Dick states below a tarp is a must. A throw
away tarp from a paint store is good, I think we used a 10' x 10'. My
friend convinced me you must scrape all of the old residue and adhesive
off of the hood as you want a clean surface to start with. I believe we
used an adhesive remover and it was a hard, messy job. What was so
important was letting the adhesive cure for the full time recommended in
the instructions on the can before placing the pad to the hood, in my
case it was 10 minutes and my friend actually had us walk across the
street to get a coke just to be sure we waited long enough. The adhesive
I used applied to both the pad and the hood surface and we used the
entire can. It was definitely a two person project and turned out
beautifully.

Jonathan, Rusty, Performance Products. Cost $40-50 plus 3M Super
Adhesive $15-18 for a can.
You should be able to scrape clear the old material leaving the original
adhesive bead if it's not flaking off easily and just apply the new
adhesive to the under hood region and the foam backing before applying.
Test fit the new piece first so you know where the marks are for
centering. When setting in place, work from the center outward as you
press in place. I'd recommend you tarp the entire engine bay, fenders,
front bumper and windscreen to avoid overspray.
Regards,
Dick

Seriously get a reasonable tarp/cover to lay over the engine
bay and guards.
If your existing liner is like mine was then it will crumble
and fall apart as you try and remove it and it will make a
big mess.

No, I'm not advocating doing it like I did particularly. I did not ask
the list so did not have the benefit of the excellent recommendation for
using a tarp. By all means, get a $10 tarp from Wal-Mart or something.
That's really a no-brainer. I was just saying I used the liner and
adhesive from Rusty and it worked out great. My old liner was really
just falling off in one piece. I only had to get the gunk off the
inside of the hood before reapplying the adhesive so I didn't have as
much to do as Matt, Dick, Jonathan.

Ike

Just curious, any list members have an R129 SL with FL plates (I think it
was an SL500, but I don't think an SL500 could have gone toe to toe with the
540 I was in like that, so maybe it was a 600) and are in the DC area (MD

Markus;
Is this e-mail serious? I don't quite understand what she says happened.
"He" needs about eight quarts of oil, if He needed only two it's not the end
of His world. Something else has happened. Is He ruined? Possibly, but
not likely because of the oil.
What did she do about Him? Did she put the two quarts into Him? Is He
still at the side of the road? There are a bunch of other answers needed to
even venture a guess.

Good questions! I'm not sure either, I got the email to a different email
account and it didn't sound like spam, but I wondered why she would email me
directly, not the list, I'm certainly not the expert in the group! So I
forwarded it along here, and replied to her individually but haven't heard

quite understand what she says happened."He" needs about eight quarts of
oil, if He needed only two it's not the end of His world. Something else has
happened. Is He ruined? Possibly, but not likely because of the oil. What did
she do about Him? Did she put the two quarts into Him? Is He still at the
side of the road? There
are a bunch of other answers needed to even venture a
guess.-Bellamy>From: "Markus Meyer" >Reply-To: Mercedes Coupes Mailing

BTW, if you clean off the old pad (get goggles, a dust mask, a plastic
scraper, and a tarp and it's easy) a body shop will put the new one on
proper (take off the hood, lay it upside down and then put on the pad) for
like $30. At least that was my experience.

Hood pad for the SEC is more than for the SEL--about $75 + S/H. Buy the
General Trim Adhesive by 3M P.N. 08088 which I bought at Advance Auto for
$14 and use most of the can. Get a cheap drop cloth or tarp in paint area
W.mart, Big Lots about $1. Jim Alex
