With the car running, smack the sides of the console with your hand/fist on
each side of the pushbutton switch assembly. If the fan starts or even
tries, then it's likely the solder joints in the switch assembly.
MB has a small printed circuit board (PCB) on either side of the switch
assembly and uses a small pool of solder to join that PCB to the main PCB,
which is at 90 degrees to the little one. The small PCB contains the socket
for the large bundle of wires that plug in on both sides of the assembly.
The bundle moves/flexes, which flexes the small PCB, and since the large PCB
with all the switches mounted on it doesn't move, it cracks the solder
joints and you get an intermittent fan.
Empirically derived information, don't ya know.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] AC Blower not working
On my 1986 560 SEC:
The ac is working (I get cool air from the vents, which flows when I
pop the sunroof up to create a slight draft), but the blower fan
refuses to work in any of the 3 modes. The 30A fuse outside of the
fuse box was busted, so I replaced it and the fan worked again; then
stopped. That new fuse is still intact, but the #10 fuse in the fuse
box was broken, so I replaced that one--no change.
It is very hot in So. Cal. these days.
What should I be checking next?
Thanks,
Paul
