[W126 Coupe] Burning smell and rough idling

Hi;

You need to be a bit more specific on your "problems".

What year and engine?

Problem 1: When you say it wouldn't start twice in one day, obviously it
DID start. What did you do to get it to start the first and second time?
Anything, or did it suddenly "fix" itself?

Yes it could be a solder connection in the fuel pump relay (not the fuel
pump) The relay could be heating up also, (smell) but not likely for a
month.

I gather that it has never happened again, yet. If it does, you can test to
determine if it is in the fuel system.

Problem 2: It idles a bit rough now? All the time, or just off and on?
Have you changed the ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor in recent
memory? The possible fuel pump relay problem and the rough idle are not
likely connected.

Problem 3: As David says, the burning smell could very well be something
leaking somewhere, like oil on the hot engine block. Are there any visible
oil leaks? Power steering pump? When idling, does the smell seem to be
coming from the front or rear of the engine... one side over the other? Any
drops of oil or antifreeze underneath?

Of course, in New York City, the burning smell is likely from the street
food vendors.

That, or from a taxicab cruising by on the sidewalk at 85 MPH with a
pedestrian or two caught up in the undercarriage.
