>From 1996-1997, you could get an E320, E420 or E55. The 320 still had the straight 6 from the earlier W124 series. But in 1998 the E320 got a V-6 for the first time, and I think the E420 became the E430. You could get them in 4-matic or real wheel drive only configurations. In 2000, there were slight cosmetic changes. Overall, I don't know of any pitfalls with the E class, ever. I still know people with W124 sedans with well over 150-200K still running strong and swear by them. The W210 seems to have been a very good replacement for the W124.
My dad's 430 is a 4-matic, has the sportier suspension, 275hp, 17 inch wheels with high performance tires, and rides like a dream, according to him. He thinks he is in luxury compared to the W124 300E 2.8 he traded it for, and he loved that car too and only sold it in the end because of high mileage, intermittent starting problems, and somebody side-swiped him and bashed in the entire pass side of the car.
2003 brought the redesign to the current body style, and of course the 320 is now a 350, the 430 is now a 500.
