There are a number of ways to make your M104 Hum quite nicely, all it takes
is $$.. For one, you can build the motor up to AMG specs, go out to 3.6L,
higher compression pistons, AMG cams and headers/exhaust. Or, if you like
Mossleman makes a twin turbo set up that's
Beautifully done..Intercooled/alchol injection etc.. Even the M103's do
Wonderfully w/ turbo charging.
AMG also made a 'baby' hammer in the 124's.. 6.0 DOHC M117 stuffed in
there..rare bird but they are out there!
As far as cam snapping goes, I'd look to mis-aligned cam towers or a twisted
head/warped head Has the head been decked excessively? Was the mating
surface of the intake manifold re-machined to align properly? Just trying to
think of ways excess stress could/is being imparted to the head/cam.
Cam oiling failure could be contributing but I would think you would hear
the cam complaining something akin to a failing wheel bearing prior to
catastrophic failure.
If someone said that removing the air intake tubes will net your 20Hp I'd be
curious as to what drug they are partaking of as I might like some one
Saturday night! Removing the air cleaner all together nets you a b/w 1-2 hp.
Having driven SL/SLC's of various types I have to disagree on the 450's
handling better. 107 suspension is essentially a 1960's design.. the 450
doesn't even have the benefit of the 560 SL aluminum control arms.
Perhaps a 560SL w/ the hard top installed, lowered w/ some 17 or 18 X 8/9"
would help, but I still don't think it will work as well as the 126 coupe..
