If the only way MB sells the rubber surround insert for the console shift gate is attached to a $400 piece of veneer, you may want to try and measure the overall cut-out size and compare this to the 126 later year sedans. The sedans use a plastic surround with four pressure slots that fit between console wood and shift gate enclosure. What's more this plastic rim sort of folds over onto the surface of the console wood where the original rubber flushes up to the wood's edge and sits more on the shift gate.
If the measurements are close you could just try cutting off the pressure tabs and see if it will sit in place with a dab or two of black silicon. 'If it does not fit you must errrquit' and figure out another solution. I figure this may be worth a try. I'll do a test fit of the sedan plastic on my coupe when I get a chance the end of the week.
