Jay,
The two time technique should be sufficient to ensure fuel pressure is all
the way up. It may not cure it, but it should be enough to eliminate the
pumps/injectors. The next segment of the problem would then likely be
electrical.
Make sure all connections to the ignistor and coil are tight. If you have
the chance to get the car into the "not start" condition and have a minute
of so, then take a spark plug wire off the engine and, using a spare spark
plug in that wire, verify you have spark immediately upon cranking the
engine. Try the spare spark plug when the car will start immediately to
familiarize yourself with the amount of spark you get in a known good
condition so that you can compare it to the "known bad" condition spark.
Back to basics - the car won't start if it doesn't have enough fuel, enough
spark, or enough air. Engine timing shouldn't be a problem, but you could
check the connection to the crankshaft position sensor that reads the plate
on the harmonic balancer.
Good luck,
Mike R.

Mike,
I'll try the two time technique. I've tried turning the key on and waiting
for around ten seconds before trying to start but still takes the same
amount of time. (I was told if there was a leak down or weak pump this would
confirm it.) I've even tried holding the pedal all the way down when
starting, but all this does is to cause the engine to rev up momentarily
when it does catch. I've had this hard start problem for around a year and
have pretty much learned to live with it. It is, however, a little
embarassing when there are people near and they turn to look when they hear
this thing cranking and cranking.
