[W126 Coupe] TOW POINT COVER?

The 300SD/L's can be plugged into an electrical outlet during the cold months of the year to keep the diesel from congealing or something like that. The electric cord can stick out of this hole. My father has plugged in his W126 diesels in to an electrical outlet before. This might be a carryover or crossover part on the W126 lines.
Does anyone know if the non-diesel W126's have any type of heating system that requires it to be plugged into an electrical outlet? Possibly the optional BBW 46 Car Preheater? It looks like that one just consumes fuel, but is the battery the only source of power for that?

Can someone tell me why there is a hole in the TOW POINT COVER?
I was just curious. I'm sure there is a reason for it.
