[W126 Coupe] bizarre noise coming from dashboard

[Edmund Conran]

the AC is switched off and hasn't worked since I have owned the car; 
one of those things I plan on doing!  It seems to happen irrespective 
of whether the blower is on or off. My wife thought it was a cat, but 
I'm pretty certain it's not mice!
