[W126 Coupe] O/T Boat Q

I've just purchased an old boat. It has a strip of aluminum around the
perimeter which holds the topsides to the hull. It's been there since
1969 and is as pitted as you'd expect. I'm sure several list members
must have good advice on how best to deal with pitted aluminum. Best =
easiest method. I'll probably paint it once I deal with the pitting.
Absolute easiest would be replacement, but I don't think such old parts
will be available. Haven't found any yet, but search has just started.
Second easiest would be some magic formula to rub on the aluminum
which acts as a mild solvent; of course, it would have to *not* also
act as a solvent on the fiberglass.

Thanks for any sage advice you've got!
