Spraying the pin contacts with cleaner will do nothing, as they a silver coated and you rarely see corrosion on them. Fuel pump relays usually end up with cold or poor solders on the circuit board. I have repaired both of mine and are still OK after two and three years. He lucked out I'm afraid. Take the relay apart and resolder all the joints on the board. Be carefull that you don't use too much heat. IF you are uncomfortable doing this give to someone who has soldered boards. I use a brass alligater clip as a heat sync on any transistors and diodes that I feel may be heat sensitive.

The mechanic could find nothing wrong & brought the car back & charged me $50. He said he had removed the fuel pump relay & sprayed it with "electronics cleaner". I presumed that fixed it & got him to show me where the relay was so that I can give it a nudge next time this happens. The tow truck cost me $60
