Does your transmission have a "B" position? At a standstill, move the 
lever down to there and then sideways in the gate. Let the lever spring

There are none. The first-gear start doesn't change the engine, but does 
make it "feel" livelier.

I expect that means compression, cams, manifolds, you-name-it.

Not likely. Make sure you have good plugs, wires, distributor cap and 
rotor. Replace the R16 resistor with a value compatible with the 
highest-octane gas you care to buy. Set the idle/midrange mixture as per 
<http://www.landiss.com/mixture.htm>. Trade it for a 560!
