The 380 does start in first. You sure that the SEC is heavier? IIRC the
SE is 3840 and the SEC is 3750lbs. I'm surprised the euro gets sooo much
better mileage. EPA tried to make things better and instead they just
made it a lot worse...typical.

380 mileage... The records that I kept averaged just over 20 mpg (US).
The car is my 380SE. The driving was mixture, but favored more highway
mileage than normal (maybe 70/30), but offsetting that was a lot of
miles through the mountains. Strict highway mileage was abt 25 mpg.

I kept the fuel records because I had to record the mileage anyway.

But also the SE is a European... no cats, no AIR.

On the issue of the SE vs SEC, yes my European SE is supposed to have
204hp with 9.4:1 compression and the SEC 155 with 8.3:1. That should be
a huge difference but I don't find much difference in practice. Both
are '83's. The SEC is a few pounds heavier than the SE. Like the
transmissions in the 300SD (diesels), I believe they both start in first
gear.

One of these days I will be a bit more scientific and test them both.
