There's a third option. Rather than spending money on an older SEC that may not be worth the effort or buying a new Benz which can be prohibitively expensive, consider shopping for a low mileage '91 SEC. For less than the price of a new Toyota you can get a world class statement of German engineering, safety, and style in a collectible that can be used every day. You'll be getting the last year made with all of the evolutionary improvements that were made over it's production run. If you shop properly, you may even find something that will hardly depreciate over the near term and may even eventually increase in value.

Richard is on to the solution here.
A CL600 or S500 Coupe is the only thing that could replace your original
car. You get attached to these in ways that all guys certainly understand.
I didn't have this argument with my better half. I don't know why. It was
the first decision I made on my own in 20 years that wasn't accompanied by
a fight. Maybe there is some trust building in my favor.
Newer car equals higher insurance premium, taxes (I live in Mass.),
financing if necessary as well as other costs.

Oh, I know how to do that. Tell her that you want to replace it with a
similar car so you're looking at CL600's.

Rick,

Thanks for the input. I'll be mulling over it this weekend.

The most difficult thing is of course to explain to my better half why it
is
better to spend money on the old SEC, rather than to go out and buy a new
car.
