Yeah, they do overtighten them. You should tell them to handtighten and tell them what torque (it's in the owners manual, I know for the 85 380SE it's 110Nm). Even still, get your own torque wrench, and when you get home and wheels are cooled down loosen them and retorque them.

I had once that problem with one of the wheels of my Jaguar.
I had to use a torque wrench and set it to about 200 lbs to loosen the bolt.
I think the tire shops are tightening the bolts to much.
And a torque wrench at Home Depot cost about $69.00.

It is also a good idea, to take them to the wire wheel
to clean them up a little.  I do that with most bolts
I take out so I can get the crap off of them.
