Don't know if this analogy helps, but I think about audio systems as a 
chain; it is only as strong as its weakest link. Nor does it help if one 
element is super-duper, the best (and cheapest) solution is if everything is 
about equal in performance.

The easiest way to improve sound in the car is to replace factory speakers. 
Mostly because it is something anyone can do and it does not require mucking 
about with the electricals.

That being said, to do a real upgrade a new head unit, speakers and wiring 
is needed. The last one is quite important. Don't skimp on new speaker 
cables and power the unit directly from the battery.
