Hello all: I have a '91 black / grey SEC in fantastic condition I am interested in selling. 110K miles. Car has been maintained at Hatch & Sons here in Boston and is well - known to them; it is a past award-winner at Germanfest and in wonderful cosmetic and mechanical condition. I've installed correct adjustable OEM headlights, vacuum tubing and switch (including correct fibre-optic illumination to same), had the wood refinished at Heritage, and replaced the headliner, hood badge, and numerous other cosmetic parts with OEM parts as well. OE wheels that are chrome plated with additional full set of OE wheels with snows. Nakamichi stereo with upgraded speakers. Just a beautiful, reliable and well maintained car. Dan,
In your topspeed excel spreadsheet, where did you get your frontal area data? I've seen different numbers online (online I see 22.59 and you have 24.7). BTW, using the frontal area I have for an SE (23.13) your excel sheet matches my 380SE's real life specs almost exactly (top speed for 155 crank hp in your excel sheet is 121 and I got 125, which can be explained away by temperature, and also my gtimer says I get 132 rear wheel hp so calculating based on that gets 123.5 on the excel sheet, and at that point speedo error is larger than the difference).
That's some good work you did there.

Has anybody been able to build in a trunk mounted CD player to work with the original Becker Grand Prix that came in the pre-86 cars? I suppose you would have to install a separate toggle to select it if it can be done at all, though once I get some free time my ashtray will be a switchboard anyways (toggle from air horns to regular, on/off and warning light for laser jammer, still gotta put in a toggle for the aux fan). Short of this, has anybody found a radio that looks decent in these cars? Everything I see nowadays looks too gaudy and modern IMHO. I suppose a Mexico pro might look ok, but that's a bit of a stretch even.

Really don't remember! One possibility is that it was computed back from some wind drag data published by Car & Driver <http://landiss.info/mbz/380sec05.gif>. Someone from this list (Carl G.? Carl L.?) was also working with me on refining the equations, so he may have had some input also.
In any case, it will also vary with different tires and improvements can be made by lowering the suspension, so I am a bit surprised that Carl and I got as close as we did!

Sorry, way too many variables! My 1967 Camaro would vary several tenths
in the quarter mile just from different launch techniques. It also turns
out that not only the ultimate horsepower, but more importantly the
torque, must be accounted for; and that is not constant across the RPM band.

What year is your becker? Pre 90s becker didn't support cd changers.
Just do what I am working on right now, inset the new radio about 1 inch in,
saw the face off of the becker, and clip it in when not using it.
Or if you want, I have 2 early 90s alpines (excellent audio, and built in
amps) I could sell to you. Both in lightly used condition. The nicer one
is completely black, black buttons etcetera, and the only thing that sticks
out is the volume control.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. IIRC Renntech has a piece of
software they use that can estimate acceleration. I was just curious
cause by using your spreadsheets I see lowering a euro 500 engine in my
car with a mosselman supercharger, something that would be much cheaper
than lowering a euro 560 engine, let alone a euro 560 engine and a
Koenig specials supercharger, would get me a top speed of 157mph at
5300rpm and I wonder what kind of acceleration times that would get.

Richard,
My current setup in my 1990 560 SEC is a Sony CD changer in the trunk
connected to the Becker OEM radio. The CD sound is on my FM dial and the is
not half bad.
However, I am evaluating the Nakamichi CD 400 as a replacement for the
Becker/Sony setup.
I have found a lot of the other stuff on the market a bit "out of place"
with their neon-lit faceplates and flashy graphics. The Nakamichi is quite
restrained and I think it will be a good replacement, style-wise, for the
Becker OEM units.

Axel J. Wulff

Hmmm, I'll look into these CD players with FM modulators, I'm not that
fussy about sound (heck, I actually like the sound put out by the stock
4 speaker system, more so than the 10 speaker in my dads bmw, just wish
they had a little more oomph, which I'm guessing is lower mid range).
Oh, and my original Becker's cassette player also works. Damn near lost
it when some punk kid threw at the car from another car while both were
moving (how my brother knew this kid I have no idea. Kid ended up in
jail for breaking and entering later that year, but only after he put
himself in the hospital heading on a peterbilt. Deserved it if you ask
me), but some radio shack cassette player cleaner cassette worked like a
charm...3 years after the incident (I just assumed the cassette part was
toast when it would eat tapes).

If you are not fussy about sound quality or massive amounts of volume
you can use a CD player with an FM modulator which puts out a signal at
around 88Mhz. Tune the Becker to this on one of the buttons. These
systems have connection boxes of sorts that feed the CD player signal
into the radio antenna cables. Of course the radio antenna then
broadcasts the CD signal on the FM band and you can hear it on a
portable set nearby. This will work with any radio of course.
You can place the control for the CD player in the coin tray. Cut out a
suitable slot in the fibreglass or whatever the material is. (If the
control is too big, select another CD player.) Get at least two
magazines for your player. You will go through six, even 10 CDs pretty
quickly on a long trip and hearing 'The Best of Buddy Holly/Brahms/Miles
Davis/Nirvana' three times in two days is about enough even for me.
One hint. If you mount the CD player on the metal below the rear (hat)
shelf, don't put it in the middle. Get the thing as far over to one
side as you can, maybe even mount it vertically somewhere if the machine
can take it. It's a damn nuisance in the middle since it gets in the
way of luggage
I agree. Most of the stereo units now sold are massively gaudy
(ultra-bad taste) and are so ugly they actually frighten children.
(That goes especially for the domestic ones) The automotive systems
have far too many little knobs and buttons and are too distracting when
you are driving. I've got better things to think about than the
second function of the fourth button from the right on the third row.
like what's that silly old b- wearing the hat going to do next.

Heh, after I put in an order for cocomats and air horns all I'll have
left is about $50. Maybe if you've still got them some time down the
road when I've got some more money saved up. I was just asking about the
CD changer wonder what next I'm saving up for.

Oh, and I forgot to add, your thing about the best of buddy holly reminded me, anybody know if Sony has licensed ATRAC3 to anybody? I've been using a portable sony CD player with one of those tape adapters for now. I don't even have enough music to fill up one cd formatted in ATRAC3 (1 ATRAC3 formatted CD holds 25 hours of music). I'm just getting tired of having a portable CD player in the passenger footwell.

I installed the Eclipse. It is very easy to operate and has a lot of power
with very good features. I think it is a little more expensive, but it is
also a more high end unit.

Just a reminder that the OEM Becker uses a tuner pack in the trunk for
reception so, if you have so, so radio reception you'll probably get the
same type from the FM type cd changers. Its been my experience after two
tuner packs being rebuilt I decided to just go with an aftermarket in dash
cd player with a built in digital tuner/ digi reciver. No more fuzzys.

Do what I have done, install a carPC. I have about 10 Gigs of music on
call, and 12 gigs of music videos. Let's just say I never get bored anymore
on my commute. Plus I have 4.1 surround sound (soon to be 6.1 hopefully).

Oh, and I forgot to add, your thing about the best of buddy holly reminded
me, anybody know if Sony has licensed ATRAC3 to anybody? I've been using a
portable sony CD player with one of those tape adapters for now. I don't
even have enough music to fill up one cd formatted in ATRAC3 (1 ATRAC3
formatted CD holds 25 hours of music). I'm just getting tired of having a
portable CD player in the passenger footwell.

If you are not fussy about sound quality or massive amounts of volume you
can use a CD player with an FM modulator which puts out a signal at around
88Mhz. Tune the Becker to this on one of the buttons. These systems have
connection boxes of sorts that feed the CD player signal into the radio
antenna cables. Of course the radio antenna then broadcasts the CD signal
on the FM band and you can hear it on a portable set nearby. This will work
with any radio of course.
You can place the control for the CD player in the coin tray. Cut out a
suitable slot in the fibreglass or whatever the material is. (If the
control is too big, select another CD player.) Get at least two magazines
for your player. You will go through six, even 10 CDs pretty quickly on a
long trip and hearing 'The Best of Buddy Holly/Brahms/Miles Davis/Nirvana'
three times in two days is about enough even for me.
One hint. If you mount the CD player on the metal below the rear (hat)
shelf, don't put it in the middle. Get the thing as far over to one side as
you can, maybe even mount it vertically somewhere if the machine can take
it. It's a damn nuisance in the middle since it gets in the way of luggage
I agree. Most of the stereo units now sold are massively gaudy (ultra-bad
taste) and are so ugly they actually frighten children. (That goes
especially for the domestic ones) The automotive systems have far too many
little knobs and buttons and are too distracting when you are driving.
I've got better things to think about than the second function of the
fourth button from the right on the third row. like what's that silly old b-
wearing the hat going to do next.

Speaking of so-so radio reception, well for one my dad bmw is better but
it's also 13 years newer so I don't think mine is degraded, just not as
good, but anyways, the weird thing is with some stations I get better
reception by lowering the antenna almost all the way. I wonder why that
is.

Just a reminder that the OEM Becker uses a tuner pack in the trunk for
reception so, if you have so, so radio reception you'll probably get the
same type from the FM type cd changers. Its been my experience after
two
tuner packs being rebuilt I decided to just go with an aftermarket in
dash
cd player with a built in digital tuner/ digi reciver. No more fuzzys.

Hey Richard,
A nice deck that you may be able to find used (eBay, etc.)is the Alpine 7517, it's an AM/FM/cassette that also incorporates CD shuttle controls for a changer . I bought one new in '94, still have it, still works great. It's been the best deck I've ever owned, and has been installed and removed in the last six cars I've owned. It's black faced and buttoned, with a small green lit LCD screen for the tuner and functions. It is a high-power deck (25watts X4), and has RCA pre-outs for an amp. It also has a removable faceplate.
I'm not sure when they discontinued this model, probably around '95 or'96, but if you can find one in good working order, it would be hard to beat.
Later,
Chris

#1 - seeing as how it was written by an English lawyer, who had never
been to Ireland, as a tribute to his dog in 1910, I have no idea
#2 - Cause Michael Collins was an Irish patriot who led the most
successful insurrection against the British by the Irish ever.
#3 - probably because from what I gather people who drink enjoy all you
can eat
4 - I have no idea
5 - because they probably just take coors, add green food coloring, and
jack the price up.
Richard

This car looks like a wounded race horse waiting for the bullet.
Why do people do this?
I looked at a 560SEL a few years ago. The guy wanted $5k. He was all
excited about his idea of dropping a chevy V8 in it. I said I'd give him
$5k for the car now or $1k for it if he swapped the engine for a chevy V8.
He turned my offer down.

Looks like the hood is misaligned too. That poor car...one of the few
times I'd ever say a car should be sent to the junkyard.
