[W126 Coupe] braking and front of car noise

David,
This may not be the case if the sound is a single clunking noise, but now that you mentioned constant knocking, it may be that the fan blades hitting the bottom of the radiator, or the fan housing. This happened to my car, and after fooling around with the radiator mounts, the fan housing etc., it dawned on the mechanic that the engine mounts are gone, so braking causes the engine to go down and naturally taking the fan with it. Changed the mounts and all quiet ever since....

The engine mounts are original if I am correct. there
is a small issue with the fan grazing the shroud, just
enough to make the bottom part of the shroud a bit
shiny. Hadn't thought of the mounts, I will have to
have those checked.
But when you have your foot lightly on the brake, it
is more of a constant knocking, almost like the
bearings are loose?
