[W126 Coupe] braking and front of car noise

Does not sound all that bad to me. I very much doubt you have a major
engine problem. If the car has been serviced at the right intervals (oil,
etc) you probably have some typical wear on a vintage Mercedes that is now
20 years old. When you go in for the inspection to an independent mechanic
make sure you will be allowed to work right along side so he can show you
exactly what he finds by sound, sight and touch. You'll be much more
confident he has routed out the problems and not just looking to clean out
your wallet.
