Resistor plugs are optional IF you have resistance wires and the 
resistive rotor in the distributor. As I recall, "good" wires might be 
1000 - 5000 ohms, the rotor is about 1000.

If the rotor does not point to the index mark on the distributor housing 
at #1 TDC, it will burn because it is not near the copper contact when 
the spark fires.
