I have attempted it, and I would caution you to BE VERY CAREFUL.
I removed the instrument binnacle to put white dial-faces in my SEC and had
to remove the needles on the various gauges for the installation.
What I discovered is that they are very difficult to get back on correctly
because they have to be placed in the exact right position and there are no
markers to verify that they are correct (until you fire up the engine and
the oil pressure goes to 5+ at idle.....).
The needles are also very fragile and I managed to break the fuel gauge
needle off its base.
My advice would be to leave them in place and mask the dial-faces, put a
piece of cardboard underneath the needles so that your paint brush does not
put any pressure on the mechanism.
Good luck.
