Get an accessory fuse box with four or five contacts and a suitably rated
relay, maybe 10 or 15 amp. Connect the relay with the coil side wired to
the ignition and the contact side direct to the battery. This gives power
only when the ignition is on and prevents the ignition from carrying the
entire current. Alternatively, just wire the acc. fuse box direct to
battery. From the fuse box take leads to your radar detector, another
lead might go to the boot/trunk for a car refrigerator, sound system,
two-way radio, you name it. Tidies thing up no end and protects all the
circuits. You can add spike and electrical noise filters if you like.
The next step is to install suitable sockets in the car for these
after-market items. These can be inconspicuous. Cigar lighter sockets are
fine but a bit clumsy. Check your electronics store for neater sockets
and plugs, but make sure they can't be connected the wrong way or easily
shorted. The soldered type is most secure.
