Robert,
That's great advice for cooling system maintenance on any vehicle.
Thanks,

David, it's been a while since I replaced one, but a couple of things come
to mind:
1. Go easy on the three bolts getting them out--wouldn't want to snap them
off.
2. When installing the new stat, make sure the little hole in it is at the
12 o'clock position.
3. Use anti-seize on the bolts when re-installing.
4. Mix the coolant & water 50/50. Don't just dump a gallon of coolant in the
system and then top of with water. And use MB coolant.
5. Replace the radiator cap with a proper pressure one. Replace any hoses
that are bulged out, or hard. If it's been several years, you might want to
consider replacing them all at this time.
6. Tighten the hoses. I did my wife's SL t-stat and all hoses but didn't
tighten them enough. Found most all of them all leaking when I pressure
tested the system later. Funny thing was there were no visible leaks prior
to the test.
7. Check the radiator level daily for the next week.

I need to replace the thermostat in my 85. The engine
does not ever reach any sort of operating temp, I
believe the thermostat is stuck open.

Is there anything I need to watch out for? Any good
tricks? Anything to avoid?
