Glad to hear they fixed it for you, did you have to pay the labour cost for
the repair?
Matt.

.. My pristine '91 560SEC snapped a camshaft for the second time in less
than a month.
That must have been the situation. The car is back and running wonderful
again. He said the rear cam tower was .004 out of alignment and the leading
machine shop here in Kansas City did the work in making it right. The cam
was replaced under warranty and I paid a total of $500. for a new head
gasket and valve. One valve was bent this time. The rest went toward labor.

A common issue in OHC motor's with a warped head after overheating is
alignment of the cam bearing holes in the towers.
Checking of the bearing surfaces on the cam and in towers should highlight
unusual wear if this is the cause.

They did replace the oil tube, on both sides, at the last cam change. When I
suggest the lubrication issue they mentioned that the oil tubes were
actually fed through this tower. Now that I look at your picture that does
not seem correct, the tube system feeds them as well as the cam lobes.
Thanks for your thoughts and picture.

I don't recall anyone else on this list having a snapped camshaft before and
for you to have 2 would suggest to me that it's not defective cams. When
the first cam was removed was there any signs of excessive wear or heat on
the bearing surfaces? Maybe the last cam tower isn't getting enough oil,
causing the cam to heat up in that bearing, expand, seize up and snap.
Did your mechanic replace the oil tube? The plastic connectors can become
brittle and break, not allowing oil to get to the cam surfaces.
Chet
