Rob,
I think we have located your problem.
Our cars came standard with an Offset (ET=Einpresstiefe) of 25, which
represents the distance the attachment plate of the rim is off from the
midpoint, i.e. closer to the outer edge of the rim by 2.5 cm.
Later model MBs have higher offsets of 30, 35,37,40, 47, etc., depending on
the model. A higher offset "pushes" the inner edge of the rim closer to the
center an will cause rubbing against the inner wall.
I don't know which offset your rims are, but if 5mm spacers have not solved
the problem you should try 20mm spacers, if you want to keep the rims.
